May 11, 2016. #2. Main problem would be having to protect the ways from all the grinding grit. Bench grinders are quite cheep and very very handy. You can fit a polishing wheel to them also for buffing stuff also. Sharpen drills and lath tools, touch up the …
A lathe is a machine that rotates the workpiece about an axis of rotation to perform various operations such as turning, undercutting, knurling, drilling, facing, boring, and cutting, with lathe cutting tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object with symmetry about that axis. For general purpose work, the tool used in is a ...

It also includes regrinding the flats and angle of the saddle followed by application of Turcite B followed by regrinding again but allowing for the material removed from the bed so the leadscrew/gearbox will realign.

BUT, and it's a BIG BUT, everything changes it's vertical position when grinding a bed. Especially the apron assembly. If you shim for that, you have to contend with the gearbox that drives the leadscrew, etc.

Lathe will have to be completely disassembled down to th e bed casting, then set up on a bed grinder ( usually a modified old planer with long travel ) . Afterward the head and tailstock will have to be aligned to match the same height, and the saddle will need to have the sliding surfaces reworked to match the newly ground ways .

WoodCentral's Tool Grinds Page. Here are some photos of lathe tool grinds submitted by our Turning forum visitors. It is our suspicion that there are as many grinds as there are turners, and that a skilled turner knows instinctively how to present an edge to the work for the best result.
I have removed beds from lathes before but not like this - the CVA base is cast and rests on 3 points on the ground with no attachment screws etc. Simply put, the cast base is a structural part of the lathe. No folded sheet metal here. PeteF - My plan was to …
